I have read the full series, as well as all other books by steven kings as well as Richard Bachman. I advise reading EVERYTHING that has been writen because King has said that many of his books if not all have ties to the Dark tower and after reading the laste Dark tower book "Song of Susannah" it is made clear that ALL the writings of Steven King are tied to the tower.
But if you want a basic set to go along with the dark tower i advise the following:

It isn't necessary to read any of his other things in order to get what's going on. It's just kinda cool to be able to understand some of the references. I think it's actually better to read DT first and then to go back and read the other stuff. Suddenly Hearts in Atlantis is very cool and what Ted's talking about makes sense.

I'd say the two most important ones to read would be 'Salems Lot and The Stand. Some characters in those factor heavily into DT...
